Self in Cyberspace: Class Wiki Winter 2009

Using a 'wiki' is pretty simple once you get used to it. If you want to do any formatting like using italics, there is simple syntax or use the menu above each window. Don't be afraid to fool around: you won't break anything. Just be careful about erasing other people's work. (I shall make regular backups plus former edits should be automatically preserved.)

Our first use of the wiki is to develop some constructive criticisms of Ess's textbook chapter on privacy. You can find his text at Ess Text. Naturally we might want to look at other sections to help with the review. (I notice Ess is very keen on the intercultural dimensions of privacy, and he has a section on philosophical ethics too.)

It seems to me the following aspects are important in an evaluation of review of this sort:

  • Clarity of presentation
  • Coverage of important and interesting topics
  • Informative analysis
  • Organization of material
  • Usefulness of exercises

I will probably get us started by making some remarks on some of my reactions. I already have some notes composed but that will have to wait until Thursday evening.
